Torre Rosa’s team presents a cocktail to welcome autumn, inspired in a dessert’s recipe: the crumble.
The first written reference to apple crisp is from 1921, with a recipe on the Everybody’s Cook Book: A Comprehensive Manual of Home Cookery, from the USA.
Later became quite popular in the United Kingdom, with the name apple crumble, during the time of rationing during the Second World War. The British government stablished a food rationing system. Every citizen was going to the local shops and he was given a rationing book that contained a series of coupons. The corresponding ministry guaranteed the provision of the assigned quantity to every merchant according to the registered customers.
In January 1940 began the rationing of pork, butter and sugar. Later was followed by the meat, tea, marmalade, cookies, breakfast cereals, eggs, milk and canned fruit. This food control led to the emergence of a black market, where they used to cheat the customers with cheaper substitute of the products as for example horse meat instead of beef.
Sometime later, this dessert has become very popular in all the United Kingdom, the USA and Canada, where is one of the most typical recipes of American confectionery. The simplicity of its elaboration as well as the possibility to make it with a wide variety of fruits (especially the ones with an acid component) gives it a great versatility. In the fall season, just when the fruit has been harvested it is especially frequent given that there is usually a surplus of fruit. The apple crumble is often tasted with ice cream or English cream.
