Days get shorter and it starts to cool down, you want to sit on a terrace, put on your light jacket and enjoy; longing takes hold of us and time seems to stop with the arrival of autumn.
It is time to eat chestnuts, look for mushrooms and decorate pumpkins; activities that help us to spend very entertaining moments. A time when the light is special and the nights are still pleasant.
October has arrived and with it our new cocktail: Old Cuban.
Invented by Audrey Saunders in 2001, it quickly found its way onto drink menus of bars across the United States.
And like classic cocktails, the recipe is very simple and only requires: rum, sugar, lemon, mint, bitter and cava.
It is the perfect mix between the famous mojito and the French 75, a drink based on gin and sparkling wine.
Moreover, these days it’s hard to find a bar or restaurant that doesn’t have a cocktail menu full of original creations.
Mixologists around the world are competing to innovate and make a lasting mark on bar culture. But what does it take for a new cocktail to transcend from a unique recipe to a modern classic?
It takes someone like Audrey Saunders, owner and founder of the Pegu Club Cocktail Bar in New York City, and a drink like the Old Cuban; Aged Rum provides greater depth than standard white rum for the mojito, a couple of strokes of Angostura bitter to balance the sweetness and the creator’s masterstroke, changing the mojito’s sparkling water for sparkling wine, which gives an aura of elegance capable of being seen in the great hotels and bars of Cuba during prohibition in the US.
In our case we decided to use Havana 7, whose flavor of the Cuban land is the one that transcends, from its tobacco known around the world to the delicious fruits of a tropical garden, to which are added the spices and the aroma of vanilla that we get by aging. We could not imagine a better rum to bring this great recipe to life.
As a result of such a rule, bitter could not be less, and we chose Aromatic Leaf from the Esencias of Cuba range, where Bitter Truth and Havana 7 come together to highlight the dominant aromas that we can find in this ageg Rum in question, especially the sweet tobacco.
So you can’t leave Torre Rosa without taste it and experiencing the luxury on your own lips.
P.D: as Ernest Hemingway would say: ´´my Daiquiri at El Floridita and my Mojito at La Bodeguita´´, and the Old Cuban from Pegu Club in Torre Rosa. (poetic license)
