Gin Pesto, cocktail of the month
A contemporary classic
This cocktail was created in the year 2008 in the city of Hamburg, Germany, by the barman Jörg Meyer, owner of “Le lion bar de Paris“. It seems that its creator wanted to take advantage of the properties of basil (when he could get it fresh in the market) which, unlike mint, gives a very green colour to the cocktail and much more flavour when crushed.
The same year it was created it received the “Tales of the cocktail 2008” award and in a short time it spread all over Europe where it has had a lot of acceptance. It is not known why the American public apparently doesn’t like it so much.
From the Smashes family
Also known as Gin Basil Smash, it is a cocktail with some very common ingredients, but its combination makes it a fantastic and surprising drink. It is included in the family of “Smash” cocktails which are those made from herbs, sugar and liquor.
It is very interesting the combination of botanicals contained in the gin with the basil. And to complete it we serve it with Parmesan cheese to finish remembering the pesto.
Plymouth gin
This cocktail is served with a very special gin, the Plymouth. This gin was first made in 1793 in the city of Plymouth, in the southwest of England, one of the most important ports in the country during its long history. It is the only one that has this denomination of origin and is the most consumed in the world. It was the official gin of the English Royal Navy and according to tradition all ships leaving its port carry a bottle of this gin.
It is manufactured in the convent of Black Friars, by the traditional distillation method in a copper still, lightened with water from the Dartmoor Natural Park. The botanicals used are juniper, orange and lemon rind, coriander, angelica root, Florence root and cardamom. The result is a full-bodied gin, smooth on the palate and very harmonious.
Tasting notes
In view gives us a lemon-green color of transparency and medium consistency, the nose has aromas of fresh basil while in the mouth has a soft entry that leaves citrus notes, the strength of the gin appears all surrounded by basil flavor with a long, balanced and refreshing that make it a great cocktail of gin.
To honor the name Meyer gave to this cocktail, we have thought of a pairing with Parmesan, to make this experience even more complete.
